Hear from the author...
"Hi, I'm Kate, the author of Rockstar Icon Designer.
When I first started out in icon design I found that there was very little information to help guide me though the design process. Through a lot of trial and error, I finally came to understand and really appreciate the wonderful world of icons.
During the course of this book, I will share my experiences in the field of icon design. I'll look at rendering styles and ways to achieve them, and the many uses for icons today. This book won't teach you how to emulate others. It won't focus heavily on one OS over another; nor will it turn you into a master overnight. Instead it will help you create designs that will stand up to the test of time and help you better understand the constraints (and the joys) of pixel perfect rendering and icon design in general."
What the book covers...
Know Your Icon History:
With roots stretching as far back as the 1970's, the humble icon has come a long way. I heard someone once say: "If you don't know your past, then you don't know your future", so I felt it was important for us to include an overview of computer icon history in my book, and examine some of the important milestones in the icon's evolution. Each example represents an evolution in technology and design, and by studying the history of computer icons, we can further understand current aesthetics and hopefully predict styles that will be used in the future.
Icon Theory and Methods:
Before we begin any of the practical exercises, we first take a look at some of the theory behind icon design, rendering styles and file conventions. We have a look at the different types of icons out there and define which methods and styles are best suited (or required) for different platforms.
This wouldn't be a Rockable book if we didn't have to roll up our sleeves and actually have a go at designing a few icons ourselves, so I've included some step-by-step icon tutorials where you can follow along as I explain the steps I take in making them from start to finish.
Tips, Examples and Interviews:
The book is also peppered with a whole bunch of design tips and real-world examples of icon sets from other designers. Plus, I've also included a few interviews with three other icon designers who share their personal experiences and perspectives on the world of icon design.
I hope you enjoy my book, and find it a useful tool in helping you become a Rockstar Icon Designer!
